Metsimotlhabe, Botswana — A 15-year-old junior secondary school student was found hanging from a tree behind a yard in Metsimotlhabe on Saturday evening, in what authorities are treating as a suspected suicide. The teenager, whose name has been withheld out of respect for the family’s privacy, resided with his aunt in Mogoditshane while attending Form 3 at a local school.

According to No. 13 District Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Obusitswe Lokae, the police received a distress call on Saturday and immediately rushed to the scene. The boy was transported to Nkoyaphiri Clinic, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

“Investigations into the matter are ongoing to establish what led the young boy to take this action because he did not leave any note,” Superintendent Lokae said. “His aunt mentioned that she was utterly shocked to discover him hanging, especially since he had shown no signs of unhappiness before the incident.”

Family members and neighbors are reportedly reeling from the news, describing the teenager as generally cheerful and active in school. While the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, authorities say they have begun interviewing those closest to him to better understand any possible stressors or behavioral changes leading up to the tragedy.

Community leaders and mental health advocates have called on parents, teachers, and guardians to remain vigilant for signs of depression or distress, especially among teenagers who may feel overwhelmed by academic or personal challenges. Local organizations have also urged the public to reach out to counseling services or hotlines if they notice anyone in need of emotional support.

As the investigation continues, the Mogoditshane police are reminding the public that mental health struggles can often remain hidden, and that open, compassionate conversations—both at home and in schools—can be pivotal in preventing further tragedies of this nature.
