Key Points:

• Internal Conflict: The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) is facing serious internal divisions within its Central Committee and Executive Committee over a proposal to hold an elective conference.

• Constitutional Concerns: Critics argue that the elective conference move contradicts the party’s constitution and may be a tactic to sideline or exclude certain members.

• Factional Struggle: Some leaders are accused of pushing this agenda for personal gain, which has deepened rifts and raised fears of potential defections.

• Performance Pressure: With the party’s performance at only 25%—far below the targeted 50%—members stress that resolving internal issues should be prioritized over political maneuvering.

• Legal Guidance Sought: BCP Secretary-General Goretetse Kekgonegile has indicated that a legal opinion will be sought to resolve the dispute, reinforcing adherence to the party’s five-year term structure.

Internal Turmoil Within the Botswana Congress Party

The Botswana Congress Party (BCP) is currently engulfed in internal strife as disagreements flare within both its Central Committee and Executive Committee. The controversy centers on a recent proposal to hold an elective conference—a move that several members deem unconstitutional and a departure from the party’s traditional congress.

According to sources within the party, certain leaders are pushing for the elective conference as part of a broader strategy to challenge or potentially exclude rivals from key party positions. “It is astonishing that some leaders are secretly promoting this agenda,” a source revealed. “Decisions made outside the recognized committees not only undermine our structure but also risk fragmenting the party if members begin to defect.”

Critics argue that moving forward with an elective conference contradicts the BCP’s constitution, which stipulates a clear process for leadership and committee elections. They warn that such a move could set a dangerous precedent, encouraging individuals to prioritize personal interests over the collective welfare of the party.

Calls for Constitutional Adherence and Unity

The dispute comes at a time when the party’s overall performance is under scrutiny. With current performance levels at only 25%—well below the 50% target set by members—many believe that addressing internal governance issues should take precedence over any personal ambitions or leadership reshuffles.

In response to the brewing controversy, BCP Secretary-General Goretetse Kekgonegile issued a detailed statement explaining that the matter had been discussed at the highest levels of the party. “Our party constitution clearly sets a five-year term for the executive, with elections scheduled after the national elections in 2026,” Kekgonegile noted. He stressed that the most recent executive elections were held in 2021 and that the current push for early changes is premature.

Kekgonegile also expressed concern over circulating lobby lists that seem to target the removal of current leadership for personal gain. “It’s unfortunate that these actions appear designed to push out certain members rather than to benefit the party as a whole,” he stated. He warned that such divisive tactics could undermine the diversity that is crucial to the BCP’s strength and its representation of the broader community.

A Way Forward

The BCP constitution, specifically article 11.1, outlines that an elective conference is meant to be the highest decision-making body for electing Central Committee members in the year following the National General Election. However, the current internal push for an elective conference appears to bypass these established procedures, further intensifying the leadership dispute.

As the party grapples with these challenges, many members are urging a return to constitutional order and a focus on key strategic issues such as a constitutional review and the election of auxiliary bodies. There is a strong call within the party for unity and a commitment to the principles that have long underpinned the BCP.

In the coming weeks, all eyes will be on the Botswana Congress Party as it navigates these turbulent internal dynamics. Members and observers alike hope that decisive action will be taken to resolve the dispute, restore trust, and align the party’s operations with its foundational values.
