Molepolole, Botswana – A 36-year-old man appeared in the Molepolole Magistrates’ Court this week, facing serious charges of family-related abuse involving his two minor daughters. The case has sparked national concern due to its sensitive nature and the defendant’s controversial remarks during cross-examination.

The accused, whose identity has been withheld to protect the victims, is charged with two counts of incest. He is currently being tried for allegedly fathering a child with his 14-year-old daughter, while a second trial involving his 16-year-old daughter is scheduled for August 14, 2025.

Key Evidence Presented

The court heard from Senior Forensic Scientific Officer Tirelo Marupe, who confirmed that DNA testing indicated a 99.9% probability that the accused is the biological parent of both the victim and her child.

“Half of the DNA matches the accused and half matches the victim,” explained Marupe, affirming the strength of the forensic evidence.

Unusual Defense and Expert Response

During cross-examination, the accused presented a personal claim regarding his physical health as a reason he believed the charges were not possible. He also introduced an alternate explanation, which was later scientifically dismissed by the forensic expert.

Marupe clarified that certain biological requirements must be met for conception to occur, and that the accused’s defense theory did not align with known medical science.

Background of the Case

The situation came to light in 2021, when a teacher noticed the 16-year-old victim had stopped attending school. The teacher, Tshegofatso Motlhoiwa, investigated further and discovered the student was expecting a child. The matter was reported to Thamaga police, leading to an official investigation and the father’s arrest.

The accused’s 69-year-old mother also testified in court. She stated she became aware of the situation after the girls visited her with their father. When she noticed one of the girls appeared unwell, she planned to take her to the clinic. However, before that could happen, law enforcement intervened.

She told the court that the daughters had been living with their father, and she was unaware of the whereabouts of their mother.

Next Steps

The victims, who are currently undergoing counseling and care, are expected to testify next month. Additional witnesses, including a medical doctor and the lead investigator, will also provide testimony.

The accused remains in custody while the trial continues. The second trial is scheduled for August 14, 2025.
