Bobonong, Botswana – A 32-year-old man, Keaboka Makhandela, appeared before the Bobonong Magistrate’s Court this week following fresh allegations of sexual assault, despite already being out on bail for a similar charge.
According to police reports, the latest incident occurred over the weekend in Borotsi ward around 8 p.m., when Makhandela allegedly broke into the home of a 50-year-old woman, whom he is believed to have targeted. Authorities say he forcibly entered by breaking down the door while the woman was asleep.
The disturbing nature of the alleged assault has drawn significant public concern. Police say the suspect, who was known to the victim as a neighbor, proceeded to assault her repeatedly. The victim later told officers she had identified the attacker, and that she eventually lost consciousness due to trauma and exhaustion.
In a troubling detail, police say the suspect was still at the scene the next morning—asleep beside the victim—when she managed to escape and alert nearby residents, who immediately contacted the police. Officers found Makhandela still asleep and took him into custody on the spot.
Ongoing Investigation and Court Proceedings
Bobonong Station Commander, Superintendent Amos Solomon, confirmed the arrest and stated that the suspect had been out on bail for an earlier rape charge at the time of the alleged incident.
“He already has an ongoing case, and despite being granted bail, he allegedly committed another similar offense,” Solomon said.
“He has since been remanded in custody and will appear again on April 15, 2025, for mention.”
Superintendent Solomon added that the woman had been alone in the house, and investigators believe the suspect may have taken advantage of her vulnerability, knowing her daughter was not home that night.
A Growing Concern in the Community
Police have expressed concern over the increasing number of sexual offenses in the Bobonong area. Since the beginning of the year, five cases of sexual assault have been reported.
“We urge the community to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious behavior,” said Solomon.
The case remains under active investigation, and authorities have assured the public that support is being provided to the victim.
